Jules Emile Frederic Massenet was born in Montaud, near St. Etienne and lived a life as a teacher and composer and helped in establishing the 19th century style of French opera. He studied piano in Paris 1853. His knowledge of instrumentation was partly acquired from his practical experience as a impanic in the orchestra of the Theater Lirique.
